Dentistry for kids

What is Pediatric Dentistry?

Pediatric dentistry is a dental specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral health problems in children. Pediatric dentists have specific training that qualifies them to provide care for children’s teeth and gums as they change throughout childhood. Pediatric dentists provide comprehensive care, from preventative treatment like cleanings and sealants to treatment for oral disease and injuries. A pediatric dentist will also counsel parents about a child’s nutritional and hygienic habits.

Did you know, that early childhood caries is the most common chronic disease in American children? It is far more prevalent than other common childhood illnesses, such as asthma. Furthermore, tooth decay and gum disease that begins early in life are likely to progress over time, potentially leading to a lifetime of oral complications.

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry and specialize in treating the unique needs of children. They have completed an additional two to three years of residency training following dental school and are well-versed in child psychology, child growth and development, and treatment of patients with special healthcare needs. Pediatric dentists know how to examine and treat children in ways that make them comfortable. They have the experience and qualifications to care for a child’s teeth, gums, and mouth from infancy through adolescence. Every child is unique, so it’s important to find a pediatric dentist who is the right fit for your family. A positive dental experience early in life can carry into adulthood, and a caring provider will partner with parents to determine the best approach to treatment for your little one.

What is Board Certification?

american board of pediatric dentistry logo

A dentist who graduates from an accredited specialty program becomes a pediatric dentist and is eligible to become board certified through the voluntary examination process of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Involvement in the certification process is a demonstration of the pediatric dentist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence. The certification process involves a written Qualifying Examination and an Oral Clinical Examination covering all areas of information on which a pediatric dentist should be knowledgeable. Through this accomplishment, a pediatric dentist has earned the title of Diplomate of the American Board Pediatric Dentistry. Not all dentists are pediatric dentists and not all pediatric dentists are board certified diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
